Traditional building methods in the UK combined with a predominantly damp, temperate climate causes buildings to suffer some of the highest levels of risk from insect and fungal attack to structural timbers.

In some cases building design incorporates pre-treated timber with preservatives as a lifetime precaution against dry rot or woodworm. Unfortunately, most traditional buildings (and a lot of relatively modern ones too) do not have the benefit of such protection and this, combined with poor maintenance, leads to many cases of timber decay which is identified during housing surveys. The Lignum range brings revolutionary water-based technology to the remedial market and our inorganic borates have low intervention treatments. BORON RODS Boron Rods are cylindrical implants composed entirely of anhydrous boric oxide. They contain the maximum level of borate preservative available in rod form (1kg of Boron Rods yields 1.7kg boric acid when dissolved). For use as a wood preservative to control wood rotting fungi and wood boring beetles in new and existing structural and joinery timbers.The preservative is mobilised when exposed to dampness (wood moisture content greater then 35% w/w/). WYKAMOL BOWER BEAMS Any joist or beam end in direct contact with a wet wall will eventually succumb to fungal attack and decay (rot) thus loosing its strength, it may even break. Should this happen the problem of replacement is expensive and time consuming.

The BOWER BEAM, manufactured in 2mm KHR steel to BS4360 by Wykamol and protected by their SUPAGALV finish, in excess of BS2989, can be used to effect a quick, cheap and easy but secure and long lasting replacement. Independent tests have shown that the BOWER BEAM is capable of withstanding loads in excess of the design loads of the wooden joists they are supporting which will in turn, be isolated from the source of the dampness and further risk.
