Description
RIW Heviseal – 20L
RIW Heviseal is a cold-applied, heavy-bodied bituminous damp proof membrane formulated from natural and petroleum bitumens with fibre and mineral fillers in white spirit. It cures to a uniform black finish and provides a durable barrier against both water and water vapour.
Suitable for use on concrete, masonry and steel, Heviseal is designed for a wide range of waterproofing, tanking and protective coating applications, including basements, sub-structures, flat roofs, gutters, parapet walls, planters, ponds and water storage tanks.

Key Benefits

Application & Preparation
Surfaces should be smooth, clean, dry to a depth of 1–2mm, sound and free from frost, oil, grease, condensation and other contamination. Voids and hollows should be repaired before application, while sharp edges and high points should be removed.
Heviseal should be applied at temperatures of 5°C or above. Apply two coats at a minimum rate of 1.5m² per litre per coat. The product should be thoroughly stirred to ensure even distribution of the fibres. It can be applied using a stiff brush or medium-pile roller and should not be allowed to pool in depressions. Good ventilation is required for proper curing.
For metal substrates, surfaces should be wire brushed or sand blasted and pre-treated with a suitable steel primer. Heviseal is compatible with commonly encountered steel primers, including alkyd, chlorinated rubber and epoxy-based primers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is RIW Heviseal used for?
RIW Heviseal is a heavy-bodied bituminous damp proof membrane used to provide water and water vapour protection to applications including basements, flat roofs, gutters, retaining walls, planters, ponds and water storage tanks.
How many coats of RIW Heviseal are required?
The technical data specifies two coats, applied at a minimum coverage rate of 1.5m² per litre per coat.
What coverage does RIW Heviseal provide?
The theoretical coverage is 1.5m² per litre per coat. Actual coverage may vary depending on the nature and condition of the substrate.
Can Heviseal be used on damp surfaces?
The technical datasheet specifies that surfaces should be clean and dry to a depth of 1–2mm before application. Therefore, the substrate preparation requirements should be followed rather than applying the product to a wet surface.
Can RIW Heviseal be used for pond lining?
Yes. Heviseal is suitable for pond lining. The datasheet specifies three coats at internal angles with 0.13mm bitumen-coated glassfibre fabric between the second and third coats for reinforcement. Once fully cured, the membrane must be washed down 2–3 times with water to remove remaining solvent traces.
