Description
RIW Toughseal – 5L & 20L
RIW Toughseal is a solvent-free, polymer-modified epoxy coating supplied as a two-part system of base and hardener in pre-measured proportions. Once mixed and applied, it forms a jointless, abrasion-resistant membrane providing protection against water, water vapour, chemicals and physical wear.
Suitable for concrete, masonry and steel, RIW Toughseal is designed for demanding waterproofing and protective coating applications including basements, ground floors, plant rooms, bunded areas, raised access floors, swimming pools, wet rooms and sewage plants. It is available in 5L and 20L packs, in black or grey.

Application & Preparation
Surfaces must be smooth, clean, dry to a depth of 1–2mm, sound and free from frost, oil, grease, condensation and other contamination. Voids and hollows should be repaired before application, while sharp edges and high points should be removed.
Toughseal should be applied at temperatures between 5°C and 35°C and must not be thinned. The base component should be mechanically stirred for approximately three minutes before adding the hardener. The components should then be mixed thoroughly until a uniform colour is achieved. The two components should not be split, and the mixed product should be applied immediately.
Apply two coats at a minimum rate of 4m² per litre per coat. A stiff brush or medium-pile roller can be used for manual application. Good ventilation is required during curing.
For reinforcement at joints, angles and around pipes, RIW specifies Flexiseal Pro or Toughseal Reinforcement Tape, depending on the application.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is RIW Toughseal used for?
RIW Toughseal is a solvent-free epoxy waterproofing and protective coating used on applications such as ground floors, basements, plant rooms, bunded areas, raised access floors, swimming pools, wet rooms and sewage plants.
How much does RIW Toughseal cover?
The theoretical coverage is 4m² per litre per coat. Two coats are specified, giving a theoretical total coverage of approximately 2m² per litre for the complete two-coat system. Actual coverage can vary depending on the substrate.
How long does RIW Toughseal take to cure?
Toughseal is touch dry after a minimum of approximately 6 hours. Full chemical resistance is achieved after 7 days. At 20°C, a minimum of 6 hours is required before overcoating.
Can RIW Toughseal be used outdoors?
Yes. The technical data describes Toughseal as resistant to UV light and atmospheric attack, with high UV resistance. However, the manufacturer notes that it may not be suitable where aesthetics are important.
Is RIW Toughseal available in different sizes and colours?
Yes. RIW Toughseal is available in 5L and 20L packs, with a choice of black or grey. Select the required size and colour from the product options.
