Based on Wykamol Guidance | Presented by Clever Shield

Overview

Installing a damp-proof membrane is a crucial step in protecting your property from moisture-related damage, such as rising damp, condensation, and water ingress. At Clever Shield, we supply premium-quality damp-proof membranes, and this installation guide is based on the official Wykamol Installation Guide to help ensure your project meets industry standards.

This installation guide is based on Wykamol’s official recommendations, available in their Installation PDF.

What You'll Need

  • Wykamol cavity drain membrane (e.g. CM3, CM8)

  • Wykamol CM Plugs (or equivalent membrane fixing plugs)

  • Drill with masonry bits (typically 8mm)

  • SDS hammer drill (if required)

  • Sealing washers and sealing tape

  • Tape measure and spirit level

  • Utility knife or sharp scissors

  • Safety gear: gloves, goggles, dust mask

Step-by-Step Installation Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Make sure the wall surface is dry, sound, and clean.

  • Remove all loose debris, dust, and flaking plaster.

  • Brush away salt deposits or contaminants as needed.

  • Fill large voids or holes before membrane application.

Step 2: Cut the Membrane

  • Use a tape measure and scissors to cut the membrane to fit the area.

  • Leave at least 50mm overlap at all vertical and horizontal joints.

Step 3: Fix the Membrane

  • Mark and drill fixing points every 250–300mm, in a staggered pattern.

  • Insert fixing plugs securely, ensuring the membrane is flat against the wall.

  • Use sealing washers where a watertight seal is required.

Step 4: Join Membrane Sheets

  • Overlap sheets by 50mm.

  • Apply Wykamol sealing tape or double-sided membrane tape along all overlaps.

  • Around windows, reveals, and corners, use additional tape or sealing profiles.

Step 5: Floor Integration (if applicable)

  • When waterproofing basements or floors, extend the membrane horizontally.

  • Use a suitable drainage or sump system to handle any water ingress.

  • Connect floor and wall membranes using a corner tape or floor joint profile.

Step 6: Apply Final Surface Finish

  • Fix internal finishes using:

    • Timber battens and plasterboard

    • Metal studwork systems

    • Dot-and-dab adhesive (only with CM3/CM8 membranes)

  • Do not puncture or screw directly into the membrane once installed.

Maintenance & Aftercare

  • Avoid any direct damage to the membrane after installation.

  • Check regularly for any condensation buildup or seal failures.

  • Ensure drainage systems, if used, remain clear and functional.
