In Type A structural waterproofing, external membranes are crucial for protecting below-ground structures, such as basements, retaining walls, and foundations, from water ingress. Type A waterproofing relies on a continuous barrier to prevent water penetration, and external membranes play a key role in creating this barrier while also facilitating effective drainage.

Types of External Membranes Used in Type A Structural Waterproofing

1. Liquid-Applied Membranes: These membranes are typically made from bitumen, polyurethane, or elastomeric coatings. Applied directly to the substrate, they create a seamless waterproofing layer. Liquid-applied membranes conform to complex shapes and are highly flexible, making them suitable for intricate detailing around joints and protrusions.

2. Sheet Membranes: These are pre-formed sheets, usually made of materials like bitumen, PVC, or EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer). They are applied in layers, often with overlaps to ensure a watertight seal. Sheet membranes offer consistent thickness and are ideal for larger, uniform surfaces.

3. Self-Adhesive Membranes: These are bitumen-based or polymer-based sheets with a self-adhesive backing, allowing them to be easily applied to the structure. They provide strong adhesion to the substrate and are often used for detailed areas or where hot applications are not feasible.

4. Torch-On Membranes: Typically made of modified bitumen, these membranes are applied using heat from a torch to melt and bond the material to the surface. They are durable and effective in creating a strong, impermeable layer but require skilled installation.

External Drainage Membranes

In addition to waterproofing, external drainage membranes are used to manage groundwater and relieve hydrostatic pressure against the structure. These membranes are typically made from HDPE and feature a dimpled or studded profile that creates drainage channels.

1. Dimpled Drainage Membranes: The most common type, these membranes feature raised studs that create voids for water to flow freely to a designated drainage system. They prevent water buildup against the structure, reducing pressure on the waterproofing barrier.

2. Geocomposite Drainage Membranes: These membranes combine a dimpled core with a geotextile filter layer. The geotextile prevents soil and debris from clogging the drainage channels while allowing water to pass through efficiently. They are ideal for areas with fine soils that might otherwise obstruct drainage.

3. Cavity Drain Membranes: While primarily used in internal waterproofing, cavity drain membranes can also be installed externally in certain applications. They create a drainage cavity that channels water to sump pumps or drainage outlets, further minimising hydrostatic pressure.

Combined Waterproofing and Drainage Solutions

Some advanced systems integrate waterproofing and drainage into a single membrane, offering dual protection. These membranes provide both a waterproof barrier and built-in drainage properties, simplifying installation and reducing the need for multiple layers.

Application and Benefits

External membranes in Type A waterproofing are typically applied directly to the external face of the structure, followed by the installation of a drainage system. This approach ensures that groundwater is effectively managed before it can come into contact with the building. By preventing water ingress and controlling hydrostatic pressure, these membranes enhance the durability and lifespan of below-ground structures, offering reliable protection against leaks, dampness, and structural damage.
