Description
WearShield is a two-part epoxy paste heavily filled with alumina beads for ultimate resistance against impact, wear, abrasion, corrosion and chemical attack.
It is applied to protect equipment, machinery and surfaces subjected to intense processes by forming a new alumina-reinforced, toughened shell in excess of 6mm thickness over parts.
WearShield is used in a variety of industries – from mines to power plants – on a diverse range of processing and plant equipment. It is ideal for the maintenance and repair of ash handling systems, scrubbers, silos, chutes, mills and metal castings.
It can be applied to metal, wood and most plastics. Depending on the amount of epoxy being mixed and the ambient temperature, WearShield has a work time of between 30 and 60 minutes. This enables significant amounts to be mixed and applied without the threat of premature curing.
WearShield sets to a dark grey colour and the alumina beads are visible in the cured material. It is supplied in quantities of 3kg or 13kg.
How to protect machinery from impact and abrasion using WearShield Epoxy Paste
Before applying WearShield, surfaces should be free of paint, rust and grime before being roughened up through either grit blasting or grinding with a coarse wheel or abrasive disk pad. Full instructions detailing the preparation process can be found on the Technical Data Sheet.
WearShield should be applied as soon as the preparation procedure is completed. Part A and Part B are mixed together at a ratio of two parts resin to one part hardener by volume or weight until streak free and uniform in colour. For convenience when mixing the entire Kit, each WearShield part is supplied in the correct 2:1 ratio.
The epoxy paste is then spread over the area requiring protection using a putty knife. WearShield should be pushed in firmly to ensure maximum contact and to avoid trapping air between the paste and the surface. WearShield is built up until the desired thickness is achieved, recommended to be at least 6mm. The recoat time of WearShield is four hours.
A functional cure is achieved in between eight and 12 hours and a full cure in 24 hours. WearShield is thixotropic, meaning it will not sag. The light consistency makes it easier to mix than stiff and heavy traditional epoxy pastes.
For a faster working impact resistant epoxy paste filled with alumina, please see WearShield Rapid. It comes with a five minute work time, a 45 minute functional cure and a three hour full cure. This minimises disruption and downtime by allowing equipment to be put back into use more quickly.
